U11 OCEAN Girls - Saturday 13th Feb 2010

Phoenix travelled to their home ground at Manadon this week to play Saltash Youth in what turned out to be one-way traffic. Saltash could be excused for thinking they might have an easy ride after winning the last outing with a 9 – 2 victory over 5 player Phoenix, but not today as this match turned out to be the girls first victory!

Confusion over the kick off time was quickly resolved to allow the match to go ahead. After a difficult start to the season and only their 2nd match with a full team the girls have started to show what they are capable of and only being restricted by numbers.

Early in the 1st half, striker Emily ran up the right wing in a solo effort resulting in the first goal of the match. The 2nd goal came shortly after following a throw in from Charlie received by Gemma with a skilful pass to Ella who tapped the ball straight past Saltash Youths goal keeper making the score 2-0 to Phoenix.

Saltash Youth fought back hard getting the ball into our half and had a good shot at the goal, which was excellently saved by Phoenix goalie Amber, showing great promise. Saltash then had a corner which was defended well by Shauna and Charlie pushing the ball out to midfield, where Emily ran with the ball down the right wing resulting in a pass to Charlie who took a long strike at the goal but was saved by Saltash keeper.

Nearing the end of the 1st half a long pass from Charlie to Emily on the left wing resulted in another goal for Phoenix girls.
All in good spirits the score was now 3-0 to Phoenix at half time.

The 2nd half was no let up as Saltash were playing hard desperate to score a goal.
Rebecca took some brilliant throw ins for the team and helped defend off Saltash’s advances with the help of Shauna.
Saltash gained control of the ball and ran the field with it but Shauna intercepted and kicked the ball out of play. Saltash throw in which was defended well by Gemma who took the ball down the left wing with a controlled passed to Emily who passed onto Ella who was in a prime position to have another shot at the goal. This paid off and bought the score to 4-0 to Phoenix.

Saltash played a good game and certainly kept Phoenix busy, but Ella’s goal was to be the last one of the match as the whistle blew for full time and making this Phoenix girls first win of the season a credible 4 – 0.

Man of the Match was awarded from Saltash Youth to Ella this week which was well deserved for her excellent play.
Phoenix decided all our girls should get our own award as everyone of them deserved it and played well.

U15's LEANDER girls - Saturday 6th Feb 10

The match started well for Phoenix with the six strong team dominating the first half easily outplaying Tavistock full squad.

Hannah and Katherine combined very well up front to form a good combination supported by Zoe. Sam and Bertie did very well in defence and caused Tavistock to waste several good scoring opportunities. Stand in keeper Beth was outstanding and used hands, feet and any means to keep the ball out of the back of the net. She made one particularly good save when she cleared the ball away in what otherwise would have a certain goal. Sam was using her skills at throw ins to get the ball a great distance to our advantage.

In the second half the girls again kept the pressure up and made several good attempts at goal. Katherine missing a couple of very good opportunities. Zoe kept the opposition busy along with Hannah with some good movement. Phoenix only goal was scored by Hannah using her 'head' in a somewhat rare occurance!

Altogether the girls proved what a good combination they are and worked extremely hard to achieve a well deserved result. They were very unlucky not to have won the match when with the very last kick of the match Katherine sent the ball wide.

The team were ably supported by a good encouraging coaching staff, well done Leah, with Geoff giving good advice and encouragement to the girls as well.

Well done girls we all think you deserved to have won that match but a point is better than nothing.

Sat 6th Feb - U10's SHEEPS TOR

A bit of a weird start today as when we got to the 3G pitch no teams could go in to train, so, all teams went into the playground to have their warm-ups and I must say our warm-up was very good today, good listening to what was expected of them.
Onto the game, the boys lined up to shake hands and after the match Jordan told me that the Morley players were saying some not so nice things as they walked past, good sporting behaviour to start with!
We lined up the same as last week, I think its the first time ever that i've been able to field same team two weeks in a row. David in goal, Rhys and James at the back, Liam and Jack in midfield, Ryan and Harry up front and almost from the kick off it was evident that our boys were right up for it.
Chances came early on for us which we did'nt take on this occasion. Some good efforts by Harry, Liam and Jack we were pushing them back from the first whistle with James and Rhys settling beautifully at the back with Liam and Jack tirelessly running in midfield our shape and control of the game was very pleasing. Harry and Ryans pace looking to cause all sorts of problems. Then we struck and what a goal, a long range strike from Liam powered over the Morley keeper who it must be said was a big old unit which made it an even better strike. Shortly after the goal we made a change bringing Jordan on to sure up midfield and brought Ryan off leaving Harry up on his own, we did that and comfortably saw out the half and were perhaps a little unlucky not to have extended the lead further.
HT 0 - 1.
Team talk at half-time was that we were dominating possession and to keep going.
Second half started like the first with us clearly on top with lots of chances and extremely solid defending, the marking and use of the space by the two players at the back whether it was Rhys, Jack, Jordan or James was excellent today.
Then came the goal i'd been waiting for, the team goal involving four players Jack, Rhys, Liam and Harry, the passing and movement in that goal is what football is all about you carved open the defence superbly from Jack to Rhys to Liam to Harry who brilliantly slotted home for 2 nil. Confidence is a word that I and some of the dads use alot and it showed in that goal and also in our third goal where Harry picked the ball up from a throw and decided to have a go from easily as far out as Liams effort in the first half and it shot over the keeper superb. Our closing down, not giving any time on the ball to a Morley player was a real feature today but the most pleasing thing today was that when we had the ball we attacked with real purpose and that's down to your increasing confidence.
Every player today was exceptional, keep up the hard work boys because it will pay off.

Man of the Match from them today went to James another fine performance, and Andy gave our choice to jack for his battling. David another solid display safe handling. James, Rhys solid and communicating. Liam and Jack controlled the game with pace, power and passing. Harry splendid finishes never gave up great running. Ryan good running you just need a little more focus(we will work on it). Jordan good solid tackling again but same as Ryan focus, listening positional wise.
Well done boys great win enjoy it. 3 - 0 Phoenix.

Saturday 16th January 2010 - U10's SHEEPS TOR

Tamerton Foliot 2 V 2 Phoenix City FC

Early start today 10.00 kick off and the first game for a long, long time.

We started the game with David in goal, James and Rhys at the back, Liam and Jack in midfield with Harry and Ryan upfront. With no subs I had a feeling we may have been really up against it and the first attack from Tamerton in the first minute didn’t ease my fears as they scored after some sloppy marking and letting their forward through one on one with goalkeeper David, who came out but the player slotted it home for 1 nil..... But today was the day where I saw something new from our lads they decided through hard work, determination and togetherness that they weren’t going to accept being walked over.

After Tamerton scored our lads really had a wakeup call and in what I believe was a half that we dominated we got a great goal scored by Ryan as he took on his defender with a turn of pace and sharp shot near post from tight angle 1-1.

Liam and Jack settled down in midfield (Jack stepping up from defence for the first time) they really started dominating the game and with James and Rhys both playing in unfamiliar roles starting to look comfortable Rhys with some calm skill and James battling and talking, then after a few chances which on another day we would have taken, Liam broke down the left, crossed to the far post where Harry guided the ball home for a fantastic finish 2-1.

Halftime talk was basically just carry on with what we were doing as we were clearly on top and playing some good stuff they couldn’t cope with Ryan and Harrys pace, Liams surging runs and Jack was as calm as ever and his anticipation getting better as the game went on.

In the second half we went on the offensive had another good few chances but couldn’t kill the game off. By the middle of the second half I could see our lads tiring with a lot of them playing two games just the night before in the 5 a-side league, and with no subs we had to dig in. And, they certainly did that, but the opposition number seven (a player I was looking at as very promising until I found out he was their managers so son no point putting in an approach now) started to roam and exploit the space he had with some long range efforts which David was more than a match for, but now the tiredness was really showing late on and we couldn’t hold on any more as Tamerton outnumbered our defence as we attacked, sucker counter and good finish 2-2.

Both sides had chances late on to win but all in all a great game that I feel if we had a couple of subs so I could have freshened it up especially in the middle of the 2nd half we would have won, but like every other game we have played this season we will learn a lot from this.

James and Rhys truly fantastic at the back considering first time either have played there. Jack and Liam superb in the midfield/ Harry a willing runner and another excellent finish. Ryan’s first proper start and a great goal he didn’t stop running. David outstanding in goal again which won him opposition managers Man of the Match, ours went to James for some brilliant defending and battling.

Sat 10th October - Under 15's Leander Girls

The match started slowly for Phoenix allowing Efford to score two goals within the first two minutes. Phoenix continued to plod their way through the first half with a couple of half chances at goal. The defence kept the scoreline as low as possible but Efford acted on every opportunity. Zoe took everyone by surprise to score an excellent well taken goal to reduce the difference.

The second half and the girls finally seem to liven up and Zoe contributed a good goal. Katherine missed a really easy chance to pull back for Phoenix before Bethany went and powered a great hit to rocket it into the net for the girls. The second half was a great improvement upon the first with the girls making a much better match of it. Efford showed skill in opening up the Phoenix defence at times and then scoring.

On the whole it wasnt the best performance they have given but it wasnt the worst.
The final score was 3 - 10

Phoenix City 1 - 18 Activate Youth United

Phoenix started the match well, but were soon down two goals in the first few minutes against a strong, well drilled team.  Activate continued to dominate the match out manoevering the Phoenix girls with skill and pace.
Hannah and Kat teamed up well in the early stages of the match and made some good runs. A brilliant attempt to lob the ball over the Activate goalies head by Zoe led to a corner which was converted into a goal by Nicole for Phoenix. The girls were under pressure for the majority of the match, but there were some good saves from Holly in goal, but Activate continued to hit the back of the net for a 5 - 1 lead in the first half.

The second half saw even more goals by Activate who showed just why they are a side to watch in this league. There was another good attempt by Hannah at goal, but unfortunately today luck wasnt on Phoenix side. The girls can take pride in the fact that they are the first side this season to score against Activate.

Well done girls. Player of the Day went to Holly from Activate and Nicole from Phoenix.

This weeks 'Match Report' courtesy of Charlotte.
Team:
Saltash Youth FC Venue: Burraton Primary School - Date: Saturday 12th September 09
Kick off: 10am - Weather Conditions: Very hot and humid
Final score: Phoenix 3-0 Saltash Youth (Covell,2 Archer)

After a disappointment last week against YMCA Kitto Parkway we were all determined to get a win this time against Saltash! And we sure did ...After a couple of early shots Georgina made a great kick resulting in a goal making it 1-0 to Phoenix City!
In the 2nd half lots more possession and chances from Phoenix, Georgina soon made another great goal. We were now 2 goals up with determination to score more!
Five minutes left and Saltash struggling to get a goal a sub is made on the Phoenix team. Katherine scores a wide range shot with 2 mins to go! We could hear cheering and clapping from the parents in support of our determined efforts. A good win for Phoenix. Well Done.
Final result Saltash 0-3 Phoenix City.

A nice sunny day for the second game of the season, and a visit over the water to Saltash. A full squad was available and the starting line up was Jess in goal, Atlanta and Sophie in defence, Phoebe, Lottie and Georgina in the middle with Chelsea up front. Phoenix kicks off and the early signs were promising with both teams knocking the ball around. On ten minutes subs were used and Kat and Emma came on, in the fifteenth minute after the ball had been knocked around the Saltash goal area, Georgina provided the shot which hit the back of the net to open the scoring. 5 minutes later Dionne and Alice came on and that’s how the first half finished.

The second half started well, and Ellie joined the field playing on the left, but after a while Saltash took the game to us and put our defence under pressure, ,this was eased a little after nine minutes when a corner from Chelsea came in to the Saltash area and after a effort from Dionne the ball found its way to Georgina whose shot made its way to the net, making it three goals in two games for her.
The game continued to be very competitive with more changes of players but the last word fell to Phoenix, after a mix up in the Saltash defence the ball fell to Kat who shot the ball into the goal.

Managers feelings - a lot of good and hard work against an organised team who will only get better as the season goes on. W.D.G (well done girls). Trev.

Saturday 5th September 09 - Under 12's 'WARSPITE'
This weeks 'Match Report' courtesy of Julie Murphy

Our new season got off to a flying start with our 1st win today. From the first 5 minutes it was Phoenix who took the game to the home side and the first half saw Jordan Mu take no less than 5 corners, one of them a short corner and 2 resulting in goals. Jack B was in stunning form and opened the scoring, with Tavy having a goal disallowed for being offside shortly after. Owen got Phoenix's second after being set-up by the afore mentioned Jack B in front of goal. Jordan Mi hit the post before Jack A finished the first half by scrambling a goal just before the half time whistle. Tom P deserves a mention for showing us his great tackling skills and ball control and Marley was fearless going into the challenge. The first half finished with a 0-3 scoreline.

The second half saw Phoenix concede a goal in the first 5 minutes due in part to the poor state of the pitch just in front of the goal-line which "tricked" Charles somewhat but shortly after Jack B replied with a stunner, hammered home from just outside the penalty area. Not to be outdone and on his debut Sam then scored a stunner into the top of the net, making another attempt on goal shortly after. There was some impressive passing and understanding going on with Phoenix today and a mention must also go to Frazer for his superb throw-ins. Jordan Mu had an attempt at goal saved by the Tavy keeper but on 20 mins into this half Tavys capt. put one into the Phoenix net after Charles had made a good save from the first shot. Phoenix were determined to bag another goal though and Jack B duly obliged by putting one into the bottom left. Charles then made a great save when faced with a blinding free-kick from the Tavy Capt. this player then went on to hit the Phoenix post which was cleared away by Jack B. Tom H made another attempt on goal and was unlucky. In the dying minutes of the match Jordan Mu broke away and was fouled for the second time he replied with an 18 yard free-kick which was hammered home. Owen then had a goal disallowed for obstruction by Rhys. Fulltime score 2-7 and a great result for the first match.

Saturday 5th September 09 - Under 13's 'VIVID' Girls
This 'Match Report' courtesy of Dee Taylor

The sun shines briefly and spot on 10am Phoenix take the Kick off for the new campaign. 4 short minutes later and a long range effort from Covell out on the wing finds the back of the net after an unfortunate keeper assists it into the back of the net to give Phoenix the lead. A corner to Phoenix taken by Cory is quickly cleared away and the next few minutes see Kitto looking dangerous as they apply steady pressure with a barrage on the Phoenix goal. Great goal kicks from Davies place the ball back in the Kitto half and a free kick is giving for handball. Phoenix’s Roberts steps up but powers it wide. Another Phoenix corner and new signing Igalawuye gives a great delivery, Covell climbs and headers towards the goal for good defensive work by the Kitto team clears it away. Kitto then get the break they’ve been looking for as they score with 28 minutes gone, for one all. Kitto attack again for a great clearance by Foster, leaving the scores level at the half-time interval.
Following the same vane 4 minutes in, this time Kitto score to take the lead after a free kick is given on the edge of the penalty box is guided in. Phoenix battle back and a Phoenix corner by Roberts goes wide and is steered back in by Igalawuye before being cleared. The girls on both teams are tiring and Phoenix now has no subs as the two girls feel unwell. A last surge and a final corner to Phoenix, can we level it? Roberts takes and narrowly skims the top of the bar, it falls back to Phoenix but goes out for a goal kick. Final score 2 – 1 to Kitto but a very entertaining match which could have easily gone either way with both teams giving their all.

Player of the Day from Kitto was Charlotte and Atlanta from Phoenix

Under 13s Girls at the Morley Rangers TOURNAMENT
Sunday 21st June 2009 - (Supplied by Trevor Nelder)
What a great day in the sun.

The Morley tournament started for us by playing Morley reds, the stronger of two Morley teams. Games were in two halves of six minutes, a very tight game was staged, with Jess in goal Emma and Sophie defence, Charlotte and Chelsea in midfield and Kat as a forward. Alice swapped with Chelsea in the second half. Morley put us under a lot of pressure but in the second half it was Kat who put the ball though a crowd to score the only goal.
Phoenix City 1:0 Morley reds.

The second game saw us play Ymca Kitto, in the first half Kat scored again though a crowd, soon after that Alice turned her ankle so on came Charlotte to replace her. In the second half while Ymca were attacking Chelsea cleared the ball with her head several times 'after one corner she ran with the ball well into the other half before passing the ball across field for Kat to score, her second and third overall, the best play of the day,
Phoenix girls  2:0 Ymca.

The third game saw us play Morley whites. With us riding high we fell in to the trap of switching off, and conceded our only goal of the day, although we tried we were unable to get the goal back, our worst game of the day,
Phoenix 0:1 Morley whites.

In our fourth and final group game we needed to beat or draw with Afc Plympton to progress to the final. Atlanta joined us and went into the defence with Sophie moving into midfield the team but in a very organised effort with charlotte having her best game, and although Plympton put up a good fight they were unable break us down.
Phoenix City 0:0 Afc Plympton

FINAL - Morley Reds v Phoenix City
It was a very competitive game and both teams tested each other, it was nil nil after 12 mins and another 6 minutes of extra time, so on to penalties, this is somewhere we had not been before, with Morley scoring their first three and Emma and Chelsea having thier shots saved and Charlotte missing the post by a fraction.

So runners up and although not out right winners a great result  WELL DONE GIRLS .TJN.

Pre-season FRIENDLY - U13's Phoenix City Girls 1 - 6 AFC Plympton Girls

Thursday 18th June 09 - Played at St Marys field - 6pm Kick off
Match Report supplied by Trevor Nelder

This is the first time we had used St Marys, and I have to say as a venue it worked well, other teams were there training but there was enough space for all.
Plympton could only manage six players so we played six a side. We had a good turn out and were able to field two teams with only Jess staying on the pitch for the full game.
Thanks to the dads and their help setting up the pitch and goals, although one goal might still be under construction if not for some help from jess's mum. :- )
The conditions were ideal and I would like to thank Plympton and say, well played .

We started with Jess in goal who had a good evening being keep busy while all her team in front of her lost concentration at regular intervals. In defence we had Phoebe who took great delight that she was able to watch other teams while playing in our match as well, paired with Sophie who left her positional awareness at home,,
The midfield pairing of Alice and Georgina with Katherine in a forward position, I think? or was it Alice? as they always seemed to go for the same ball. We played three segments of 20 minutes, well Plympton did anyway. Afc scored there first goal after one of their players ran past anyone she came across and shot past Jess. Emma came on to replace Alice who was playing too far up field, only for Emma to do the same .
Second segment saw a different team, well different faces at least, this defence was Ellie and Alice who did quite well on hindsight. Midfield generals were Charlotte and Rosie, well in general all they did was run with the ball until they lost it to one of the Plympton players and upfront Chelsea waiting for that pass which nerve seem to arrive.
Plympton scored again when Ellie and Alice went for the same ball and got in each others way, my fault, I forgot to tell them they were on the same team! Emma came on for Charlotte after making one of her runs into the corner, lost the ball and fell over her own feet, causing the flood gates to open.

The third period, the starting team went back on and George found her voice and things looked a little different with some passing and pressure on the plympton goal resulting in Kat scoring a fine goal having dragged the ball back and shooting aroung the Afc standin keeper. Ten long minutes later the players were swapped, and the football tricks started, the best skill being Emma trying to shoot at goal and the ball running thought her legs, not easy to do, and takes a lot of practice. And then Rosie running on to goal only for Emma to take the ball from her, my fault again, that thing about being on the same side, not easy to learn at times.
In the mean time Afc passed the ball around, scored a few more goals helped by Jess who deciced the corner kick would never be a goal unless she scooped it out of the air into our own net.

Many Thanks to the parents for the support, I think we can put this match down to mid-summer madness, roll on the tournament at Plymstock on Sunday. TJN.
